"Soaring to greater Heights of Service and Sisterhood"
Hello and welcome to the website for Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated ® Iota Alpha Omega Chapter.
We put into action words from our International Hymn by doing, “things that are worthwhile and with a smile.”
We invite everyone to join us at our public programs and activities. We warmly invite members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. to attend a meeting, celebrate with us, and join us in our efforts to be of service.
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority is the first Greek-letter organization established by African American college-educated women. Iota Alpha Omega Chapter was chartered in 1969 and has been improving lives in the picturesque Mid-Hudson Valley for over 55 years. Since we were chartered as the 375th chapter, internationally the sorority has grown to encompass 1074 chapters with over 360,000 members in 12 countries and territories, and all US states.
We in Iota Alpha Omega Chapter humbly stand on the shoulders of those who came before, while proudly looking to the future with purpose. We have helped commemorate and celebrate our history by spearheading efforts resulting in a Bronze Commemorate Plaque honoring sailor Doris (Dorrie) Miller a “Hero of Pearl Harbor” and the first African American to be awarded the Navy Cross. Our efforts and partnership with the Cornwall Historical Society led to a Historical Marker recognizing Hudson Valley native and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Sophomore Founder, Harriet Josephine Terry.
While we work to preserve our history, we nurture and support the next generation of leaders. In partnership with the Mid-Hudson Ivy Foundation and its predecessors, we have awarded over $166,000 in scholarships and book awards, assisting more than 163 Mid-Hudson Valley high school students. As graduate sponsor for Xi Mu Chapter on the campus of the State of New York (SUNY) New Paltz, we make sure the sorority continues to develop its future members and leaders.
Currently, under the leadership of our International President Danette Anthony Reed, we are Soaring to Greater Heights of Service and Sisterhood with programs that:
-
Strengthen Our Sisterhood
-
Empower Our Families
-
Build Our Economic Wealth
-
Enhance Our Environment
-
Advocate For Social Justice
-
Uplift Our Local Community
We invite you to frequently visit this site, and to follow us on Facebook and Instagram to learn more about our programs and service to the community. Again, thank you for visiting our site. We hope to see you soon.
Joyfully Serving,
Sherre Wesley, Ed.D.
Iota Alpha Omega Chapter President
“As long as life lasts and beyond, I shall see the beautiful deeds done to help others less fortunate and the lovely hands of all the women of Alpha Kappa Alpha outstretched to the aid of others who mentally, morally, and physically are still poor and needy; and I will always thank God that I had some small part in it.”
